Squirrel Hunting - More skillful than you think!
Doing a “still hunt” while squirrel hunting can be very challenging. Of course you will see and hear plenty of squirrels, but most of the time, you will not get within shooting range of many. There are very few hunters who understand what the concept of a “still hunt” actually is. It is called this, because you should normally be more still than walking. Movement is what catches squirrels eyes and this will put them on the defensive.
While squirrel hunting, every move needs to be slow and cautious. If you stop for long periods of time, you’ll find that this might be your best opportunity to find squirrels. Every single step you take gives you a new view through the branches and leaves. When squirrel hunting this way, stop at least every two or three steps.
Often while squirrel hunting, you will see squirrels scamper up the trees and disappear before you even get a chance to get a shot on them. They’ll head right on into the holes in the trees and at this point you have one of two choices, wait for them or move on. Usually squirrels will sit tight and stay hidden for as long as a half hour. Your best bet is to wait for them and be ready to shoot when they emerge out into the open.
Squirrel hunting in a group can also be an excellent method to hunt. This is best done when two hunters walk along the same line and are about 50 yards apart. It is important to do this slowly. This can be successful because if done correctly, the first hunter will alert the squirrels in the trees and those squirrels will hide behind the trunk or tree limbs as the first hunter passes, but putting them in full view of the other hunter. In order for this type of squirrel hunting to work, both hunters need to stop often.
Another method for squirrel hunting is called the “loop and loop.” When doing this, hunters taking turns walking and standing. One hunter stands and waits while the other loops in a half circle and comes back around. The object for this is for the hunter who’s looping to push squirrels past the hunter who’s standing. This kind of squirrel hunting is not driving though. The hunter who’s walking needs to move carefully. You definitely don’t want to chase squirrels from long distances. You need to get as close to them as possible.
Squirrel hunting isn’t easy but it can be great fun once you’ve mastered your skills! It takes good patience and determination but once you’ve got the hang of it, you might surprise yourself how it can benefit you in other hunts for game and make them seem easier!
