Pittsburgh Penguins - The National hockey team from Pennsylvania



Learn about how the jersey's of this Pennsylvania hockey team changed!The Pittsburgh Penguins a National Hockey Team form the city where all professional sports teams share the same colors of black and gold. Although it was not always this way in Pittsburgh Penguins history. When the Pittsburgh Penguins made their debut on October 11, 1967 the team wore dark blue light blue and white. The sweater they wore only had the city name on the front diagonally with three dark blue stripes around the sleeve and bottom. The sweater did not bear their logo, a penguin playing hockey wearing a scarf over an inverted triangle. This symbolizes the golden triangle of downtown. In the following season 1968-1969 they put the logo on the sweaters.

The logo remained the same from the previous year but he lost the scarf. The Pittsburgh Penguin’s home uniforms had a wide band of dark blue around the sleeves and the bottom and the away uniforms were light blue and had bands of white trimmed in dark blue. The 1972-73 Pittsburgh Penguins season brought another change to the uniform. They added color to the shoulders and took the circle away from the logo leaving just the penguin and the triangle.

Finally on January 30, 1980 they wore black and gold for the first time. They hoped to get fan support wearing these colors because the Steelers had just won the Super Bowl and the pirates had won the World Series and they both wear the colors of black and gold. Now all the professional sports teams in the city of champions to be the same color. The new uniforms remained the same in design with the black replacing the dark blue and gold replacing the light blue. It wasn’t until1992-93 season that the uniforms were changed again. The black and gold color remained but the triangle and the penguin was modernized. The white sweaters the Pittsburgh Penguins wore for home games featured the new logo on the front and gold on the shoulders. The black sweaters they wore for the away games had the city’s name diagonally down the front. It looked a lot like the original team uniform with the new logo on each shoulder.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were the first NHL team to introduce a third jersey in 1995-96 seasons. It was first worn on January 27, 1996 when they played the Philadelphia Flyers. The New Jersey featured a black background with a new modern logo which included striping of the team colors. It eventually replaced the black away sweater in 1997-98. The Pittsburgh Penguins introduced another new jersey during the 1990-2000 seasons that was a blast from the past. It was black and featured as skating penguin logo which the team woe during the 1992-92 Stanley Cup Championship seasons. It became the Pittsburgh Penguins official home and away uniforms in 2002.
