The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team in the Eastern Division of the American League in Major League Baseball. Their home is the borough of The Bronx. They are one of two major professional teams in their state, the other being the Mets who play in the National League.
Since the expansion in 1969, the New York Yankees have been the most dominant franchise in the Major League Baseball. There hasn’t been any other team who has won more World Series or more pennants and many of baseball’s biggest star players have been members of the New York Yankees teams. They have won twenty six World Series out of the 39 appearances they’ve made there. They also are the only team that have players who are represented in every single position in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Some of the biggest name players in the history of the game such as Waite Hoyt, Carl Mays, Everett Scott. Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Babe Ruth have played for the New York Yankees. Some more of the current all-star players have been Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Don Mattingly, Rickey Henderson, Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs, Orlando Hernandez, just to name a few. When it comes to professional sports, the New York Yankees have been one of the few teams to define what a “dynasty” really is.
Their main rival team is the Boston Red Sox and really proves to be very exciting when the two teams get together to play.
Some other important facts about the New York Yankees are they were formerly known as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901-1902, the Highlanders from 1903 – 1910 and didn’t become the New York Yankees until 1904. They have gone by nicknames such as the Yanks, the Bronx Bombers and the Men in Pinstripes. Their home ballpark is Yankee Stadium which sits at 161st and River Avenue in the Bronx. Their team colors are navy blue, grey and white. Their uniform design is a white color with pinstripes and a navy blue interlocking “NY” on the chest. Under the general manager George Steinbrenner, they have a strict dress code that doesn’t allow any long hair or any facial hair below their lip.
The New York Yankees have also produced many talented players in the Baseball Hall of Fame such as Yogi Berra, JoeDiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth and George Weiss, among the many others.
