I’ve found that when I go out into the woods to hunt deer, I want to carry the least amount of gear and equipment with me as possible because I’ll be doing some walking, and I don’t my hunting supplies to give me any more weight than necessary.
So what hunting supplies do I normally take with me when I head out? Of course, I have my rifle and ammunition. I usually don’t carry my rifle case with me to my spot; I leave that in the vehicle. But I do take extra ammunition to have on hand incase I would be doing more shooting than I anticipated, which normally doesn’t happen, but hey, you never know. If I’m out bow hunting during archery season, I have my bow with extra arrows and of course my tree stand.
The weather is a huge factor in deciding what kind of clothing to wear. I make sure to dress in many layers if I’m outdoors on a frigid December morning because it’s easier to take off layers than try to warm up if I’m freezing. Even more important than clothing though are my boots! Footwear is extremely important. I wear a heavy pair of socks and have 1000 gram thinsulate waterproof boots to keep my feet warm and dry. Once your feet get cold, it’s all over – so keeping them warm is essential!
Other important hunting supplies I make sure to have along are items such as a good knife for field dressing, a compass just incase I would lose my way, binoculars to spot that big rack buck off in the distance, and of course, all of my hunting supplies to help field dress the deer and drag it back to my vehicle.
I keep all of my miscellaneous hunting supplies and accessories in my backpack including some food to snack on (which is best kept in a plastic zip lock bag to protect from getting wet), insect repellant, a flashlight, tissues, and an extra bottle of water or two. Of course, you may find that there are a hundred other hunting supplies that are important to have, but for me, I like to keep it simple. I don’t want to carry more than I need.
I like to purchase most of my hunting supplies at an outdoors store like Cabela’s. I even enjoy going online to their website, www.cabelas.com, and placing an order online. Their website is free to explore I’ve found that there are hundreds of products and brands to choose from.
