Invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a physical education instructor, the game that has grown to be one of the most popular sports in the world. The history of basketball tells of the original rules that players would dribble a soccer ball up and down the court that had unspecified dimensions. You could earn points by landing the ball into a peach basket. It wasn’t until 1893 that the hammock style basket was introduced. A decade after that the open ended hoop was invented and put an end to having to retrieving the ball after each basket was made. It wasn’t until April 24, 1997 that the WNBA began. The Women’s National Basketball Association. It was decided that they would play. In the summer so they wouldn’t have to go against the NBA or NCAA.
