Basketball - A game I would rather not coach
Basketball is a sport played by boys and girls of all ages. It is a game played on a court by two opposing teams of 5 players; points are scores by throwing the basketball through an elevated horizontal hoop called a basket… A basketball is an inflated ball used to play basketball. The season for basketball is usually during the winter months.
I was asked to help coach my daughter’s basketball team last year and knowing not so much about it I was reluctant but I agreed to do it. But I did with the help of my husband. At the division level we coached we had to teach the girls plays to run, drills, and skills. It was quite challenging at first coaching nine girls varying in age from 8 to 12. Some of the girls had never played basketball before and others had different abilities. It did turn out to be a pretty good season. I think the girls learned a lot as did I. They learned some valuable skills about basketball. I learned I never want to coach it again. That is not to say the girls were that bad to coach it is just that coaching basketball is not for me.
This year my husband and a friend of ours are coaching for the same age group. Our daughter and his daughter are both on the team. This year has been better for our daughter because she played at the same level the previous years. There was so much she learned by playing that she has carried on to this year. Not only does playing basketball or any other sport teach you how to play but it can also teach you so much more. At this level it doesn’t matter who won, being part of a team, looking out for your teammates having fun that is what it’s about. It builds self confidence, self esteem, and it makes you a competitor. This will help your child as they get older and if they do decide to continue to play in high school or even college, they have learned the fundamentals at an early age and can only get better from there. They will become a leader in the sport. Maybe even become a star. There is so much we can learn from watching either on television or at a live game. With March madness coming up you can watch a game on everyday.
