Sunrise - It’s never too early to see one
Sunrise is the time of the day when the sun appears above the horizon in the east. Be careful not to confuse it with dawn. Dawn is the point at which the sky begins to get light. Sunrise is thought of as an optical illusion. Why is this? The bending of sunlight causes the sun to be seen while it is still below the horizon. This is the case for both sunrise and sunset. The Earth’s eastward rotation is the westward revolution of Sun around the earth after it rises out of the horizon in the East. This illusion has convinced many for many years, so much that it had religions and mythologies build around the geocentric model (which is the theory that the Earth is the center of the universe and the sun and other celestial beings go around it).
Sunrise and sunset are usually calculated from the edges that lead and trail the Sun, not the center. This increases the duration of the day in comparison to night. There is also an equation which is based on the center of the sun. The equation can be used to figure out the time of sunrise and sunset in terms of local solar time when they will actually occur.
The timing of the sunrise varies with what time of year it is and the latitude at which the location is of which it is being viewed. Changes in the timing of it are driven by the Earth axial tilt. For example, in the Northern Hemisphere, the latest is not at the winter solstice on December 21 as many would think it would be. Rather, it is in early January. The same applies to the earliest sunrise. It is not at the summer solstice which is on June 21, but rather in early June. For a couple of weeks around the time of each of the solstices, both the sunrise and the sunset are slightly later each day. This also happens on the equator as well.
Sunrise is not only a phenomenon with the sun, but it is also a symbol used in art to signify new hope and new beginnings. Don’t miss your next one!
