freedom.jpgEvery country in the world has specific symbols which portray a sense of pride to their citizens, among these being a flag. There are also other symbols which give their people that common sense of pride that they don’t have to search for. In the United States, we Americans have many symbols of freedom.

Our national flag is the most popular symbol of freedom. Our flag is also called the Star Spangled Banner, which also happens to be our public national anthem. Our national bird is the Bald Eagle is also another symbol. Other symbols of freedom include the Pledge of Allegiance, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Statue of Liberty and the White House.

The United States Flag is very honored is revered high. Also called “Old Glory,” not only does it symbolize freedom and liberties, but it also is the foundation for which our country and government were built.

Congress chose the Bald Eagle to be our national bird in the late 1700’s. This bird was chosen because it’s a symbol of strength, bravery and skill. It was recently taken off the endangered species list in 1995.

Located in the city of Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania, Independence hall is another symbol of our freedom. It was built in the 1700’s and is the home of where many important documents were written and signed such as the Declaration of Independence and our new Constitution. It was also the home of the Liberty Bell for over 200 years.

The Liberty Bell is a treasured symbol of freedom in the United States. It was first rung on July 8, 1776 to announce the Declaration of Independence. The bell rang each year on the events of its anniversary until it cracked in 1835. It was last rung on February 23, 1846 for George Washington’s birthday. On January 1, 1976, it was moved to start its new home on Market Street in Philadelphia near Independence Hall.

Another symbol of our freedom is the Statue of Liberty located in New York, New York. It was given as a gift of friendship from France in the 1800’s.

The Pledge of Allegiance is a symbol of freedom in the United States which not only honors our flag, the Star Spangled Banner, but also our country. It was written en 1892 and its content changed very little over the years. The current version is: “I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of America and to the Republic, for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

In America, we have rights and are free. Let’s embrace and celebrate our freedom!
