Three Little Pigs - A classic fairy tale

three-little-pigs.jpgThe Three Little Pigs is a popular fairy tale that features talking animals. It is a favorite among children and can be found published in just about every children’s short-stories book.

The original Three Little Pigs story is as follows: Mother Pig decides it is time to send her three piglets away from home and out into the world to be on their own. The first piglet would build a house of straw but the big bad wolf comes along and says “Little pig, little pig, let me in!” and the piglet responds “Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin.” The wolf comes back with “…then I’ll huff, and puff, and blow your house in.” He did just that, and ate the piglet.

The second piglet in the Three Little Pigs story built a house of sticks and the same thing happened with the wolf. They had the same encounter and the piglet had the same fate.

The third piglet in the Three Little Pigs built a house of bricks. The big bad wolf came along and had the same encounter and conversation, only this time, he was unable to blow down the brick house. He became frustrated and attempted to trick the piglet to come out of the house, but the piglet wasn’t frightened and was too smart for him and wouldn’t fall for it. Finally, in desperation, the wolf threatened that he was going to come down the chimney. The piglet wasn’t going to have that so he boiled a pot of hot water into which the wolf fell when he came down the chimney. The piglet cooked up the wolf and ate him. The next day, the piglet invited his mother over and she was so happy for him. She told him that it was just as she told him it would be, that the way to get along in the world is to do things as best as you can. With that, they lived happily ever after.

Although it is believed that versions of the Three Little Pigs date all the way back to the late 18th century, it’s thought that this story is even older than that. Disney released their version and what has become the most popular version of the Three Little Pigs in May of 1933. The piglets had names in this film: Fifer Pig, Fiddler Pig and Practical Pig. The Three Little Pigs movie was extremely successful, so much that Disney created several sequels such as The Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood, although neither of them were nearly as successful as the original Three Little Pigs was.
