There are several different breeds of horses, such as light breeds, racing breeds, ponies and miniature, working breeds, color and marking breeds, mules and donkeys and crossbreeds. The breeds I would like to discuss and provide information on in this article on this page are the light breeds.
One of the oldest horse breeds is the Akhal Teke. It is predominantly honey-gold in color and is very lean. It is known for its endurance and exceptional ability to handle extremes of weather.
Another is a breed is one that was originated by the Native Americans. It is the Appaloosa. It is known for its distinct pink skin and small spots that are usually in leopard or snowflake patterns. This horse is similar to the characteristics of the Quarter horse.
The Florida Cracker was developed in Florida primarily as a cow pony. The Cracker takes its name from the whip “crackers” who herded Spanish cattle. They are similar in heritage and size to the Paso Fino. These breeds have a single foot rack or a running walk.
The Missouri Fox Trotter is a wonderful breed of a horse. It was developed in the Ozark Hills and is known for its intermediate fox trot. The fox trot is a fast walk with the front feet shuffling with the hind feet.
The Morgan is a special American bred horse produced from the offspring of a stallion in Vermont in 1789. Morgan’s have Arabian-like heads, are very deep bodied and have a unique combination of substance and elegance.
A color breed that has white skin with underlying pink skin is the Pinto. There are four different types of Pintos: Saddle type, Hunter type, Pleasure type and Stock type. They can also be of black, brown, overo or tobiano patterns.
A well-known horse is the Quarter Horse which is the classic of the American cowboy. It is a short-coupled, heavily muscled gentle descendant of the Thoroughbred and is very popular among families. It is excellent for an equestrian for riding and also for show and competition and is a world-class sprinting horse.
The Racking Horse is a breed very similar to the Saddlebred. It was developed in the southern US and is noted for its ability to make a four-beat gait which is neither a walk nor a trot.
The Saddlebred is easily the most impressive of all breeds. They have a long, arched neck, refined head, long legs and withers above the height of their hips. Saddlebreds are well known for their high stepping, ground covering stride and very graceful movements.
The world’s predominant race horse is the Thoroughbred. It originated in England around 1700 and has been long selected only on the basis of soundness, speed and stamina.
