If the latter is your choice, then maybe you should adopt a pet!

There are literally thousands of animals put into homeless shelters each year. These animals are sometimes strays, but more often than not, they are animals that were bought by their owners thinking this was going to be an easy thing, only to realize that owning a dog or a cat is a big responsibility. Some animals are put in these shelters due to an aggressive personality; some because the owners didn’t have time for them but if you should decide to adopt a pet, you will be saving an animals life!

Adoption is a big process. First, contact a humane shelter to find out their hours. The first time you go, don’t except to adopt a pet right away. First, they may not even have what you are looking for. Do you want a puppy? If you adopt a pet, you may have a long wait. Puppies don’t come in to the shelter all that often and they are always snapped up first. Do you have a specific breed in mind? This too will make the pickings harder. The median age for a dog in the shelter is around 3 -5 years. They are usually adult dogs. If you choose to adopt a pet, you must be aware of any problems they may have faced in the past. Their lives before they come to the shelter may or may not have been good. Most of the animals at the shelter have comments written about them by the people who work there and sometimes the past owners.

To adopt a pet, you will have to fill out a lot of paper work. If you adopt a pet, you must also take other animals you may already have down to the shelter for the new animal to meet. If you have small children, they must also be taken along for the new animal to meet to make sure they get along with small kids.

To adopt a pet, the animal must also be neutered. The shelter is almost always take care of this for you. They will give you care instructions for your new animals. Once you adopt a pet they are a huge responsibility, but once you get one home, they will be forever grateful and love you unconditionally!
