Crooked Teeth - What you can do to improve your smile

crooked-teeth.jpgMany people end up having crooked teeth. I had braces as a teenager, as did my brother and husband, and I’d be willing to bet that my kids will end up needing them as well. Crooked teeth is something that can be corrected, and braces are not your only option; there are several options to choose from.

Braces are the most common corrective measure for crooked teeth. Braces work by using pressure to shift them into a more attractive position. Your dentist can refer you to an orthodontist who can discuss which of the many types of braces is right for you. Braces commonly come in the form of metal, plastic or ceramic and are glued onto your crooked teeth. These brackets hold a tightening wire in place. The wire is in the shape that your orthodontist wants to move your crooked teeth into. Once threaded through the brackets, this wire tries to shift into shape, and moves the crooked teeth along with it. These wires are tightened once a month for a period of up to two and a half years, depending on the severity of your condition. I remember that I always hated the tightening of the braces because my mouth was sore for a couple of days afterward. Of the three types of braces, ceramic brackets are the least noticeable, because they are translucent in color and they blend in with the natural color. Lingual braces are a similar, even less visible option because the brackets are glued to the back instead of the front. It is common for braces to be worn for a period of two years. Once the braces come off, you will likely have to wear a retainer for a few months to keep your teeth from shifting.

A newer and more expensive option is Invisalign. Invisalign is a series of plastic, transparent, removable aligners that squeeze the crooked teeth tightly into place. Like braces, Invisalign shifts them into a straighter position. Invisalign may not work for more complex cases, you should consult your dentist about this option.

If you want fast results and can stand a little pain, contact your dentist about accelerated orthodontics. Accelerated orthodontics involves a team of dental specialists who will perform a combination of orthodontic and periodontic work to get you the smile you want quickly. This process takes about six months, much less than the two years braces require. Most often, this form of orthodontics requires you to wear lingual braces.

Your dentist can cover your existing crooked teeth with veneers bonded to the front to create a natural looking and beautiful smile. Your dentist will first shave part of your crooked teeth to make room for the veneers and use a mold to create veneers, straightening and whitening at the same time.

Whichever option you choose to correct your crooked teeth, it is important to consult your dentist, obtain their advice, and do some research before you make a final decision. You may also want to investigate prices, especially if more than one of your children require corrective measures.
