Lawn Care - Have the nicest grass in town!

lawn-care.jpgLawn care can become very confusing. At first, it all seems very simple. Just plant it, water it, and mow it. If you’re really into it though, you start to hear words such as aerate, sprigs, rhizomes and you begin to think, wow, I’m not so sure about all of this! People who are new homeowners are worried that they don’t know much about lawn care and they won’t be able to maintain theirs. Or, they might move into a home in which the grass is like a “horse track” and they just have no idea where to begin! As you read on this page on this site, you’ll find the help you need.

They first aspect of lawn care is to known what your grass type is. This is usually pretty simple to figure out but if you are unsure, take a sample to your local garden center or you can always ask someone in your neighborhood with similar lawns. Once you know what kind of grass you have, you’ll know what type of fertilizing it needs and what kind of advice you should search for.

Next, you’ll want to make sure you have a mower, a spreader, a trimmer and possibly a sprinkler. Proper lawn care requires feeding at least twice a year. There are many fertilizers to choose from and the one that’s right for you will depend on what kind of grass you have, what kind of climate you live in, what time of year it is, and how much you want to put into it. There are natural and organic fertilizers for your lawn care, soluble synthetic fertilizers, control release fertilizers, complete fertilizers and you can also get fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide combinations.

The next step in lawn care is watering. As a basic rule, most lawns require about one inch of water per week from either rain or sprinkling. It’s best to water early in the day. Don’t just give your grass a light sprinkling either. Try to avoid watering during dry spells or droughts and pay attention to any restrictions that might be up.

The proper mowing is extremely important for healthy lawn care. Mowing can mean the different between having mediocre grass or fabulous grass. Here are some suggestions to keep in mind when mowing: It is best to mow at one of the high settings on your mower, especially when it’s a hot summer day. Avoid scalping your grass whenever possible and never cut off more than 1/3 of the length of the grass. Try to mow at least once a week, maybe more often in the spring when the grass is rapidly growing. Proper lawn care requires sharp mower blades. Mowers with a dull blade will tear the end of the grass blades and leave ragged ends, which will eventually dry out and leave that yellow, rugged look.

Knowing the key facts of lawn care is an important aspect of owning a home!
