Hawaiian Flowers - A Tropical Guide

hawaiian-flowers.jpgJust about any amazing, variety of tropical Hawaiian flowers can be ordered online, day or night, then delivered fresh, coast to coast directly to your home. You no longer need to travel to a paradise getaway in order to view, up close, beautiful native orchids. You can make unique gifts out of Hawaiian flowers. For tropical themed weddings, wouldn’t be the same without striking flower corsages, or even the brides’ personal bouquet designed from Hawaiian flowers.

Hawaiian flowers are not hard to care for. With an exception of a few varieties, as soon as they arrive, soak the entire plant in tap water for 15 minutes. While under water, cut ½ inch off from the stem. Now you are free to create your arrangement. To keep your Hawaiian flowers as fresh as they were when they were received, it is highly recommended to clip the stems ½ inch every two to three days.

Many types of Hawaiian flowers work well in arrangements. The longest lasting, the Anthurium, is known as the “heart of Hawaii.” These blooms can last up to 2 ½ weeks in an arrangement. A tulip anthurium, or ‘calypso,’ is a special variety in which each section is individually cupped like a tulip petal. They come in red, purple, lavender, lime green, white and blush. The original anthurium was brought to Hawaii by an English missionary in 1889.

One of the most popular tropical flower is the “Bird-of-paradise.” This bold and very colorful flower resembles a bird’s head. They are one of the most well-used in tropical arrangements. It is said these Hawaiian flowers were originated in South Africa on the island of Madagascar. (yes, it is a real island)

Another unique type of Hawaiian flowers, Ginger, can last up to 1 ½-2 weeks. It even comes in an edible species. Of the 1,400 varieties, ginger comes in everything from flowery, red “ostrich plumes” to delicate, “butterflies”, known for their lovely fragrance. These are relatively new Hawaiian flowers, having been introduced in the past century.

An exotic favorite called Heliconias can bring a variety of sizes to your bouquet. The name, ‘Heliconia,’ honors Mt. Heliconia, home of the ancient Greek gods. These come in over 200 species, and are wonderful to use when you need a more dramatic form in your arrangement.

The Greek god Proteus has a flower named after him, called the Protea. People use words like amazing, or magnificent to describe this beauty, native from South Africa and Australia. For more information on these and many more tropical plants, call Aina Hawaiian Tropical Products. 1-877-961-4774
