Groundhog’s Day - With the infamous, Punxsutawney Phil
Every year on February 2nd, Pennsylvanians celebrate Groundhog’s Day. This is a really fun holiday.
Tradition has it that if the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, crawls out of his hole and sees his shadow, we’re in for another 6 weeks of winter. Every year the groundhog sees his shadow, without fail.
The groundhog sleeps most of the winter, and is woken up on Groundhog’s Day by someone in Punxsutawney. He pops out of his hole to stare at cameras and faces everywhere. Every year Phil sees his shadow. How is this possible?
Every year on Groundhog’s Day, thousand of people flock to Punxsutawney, the home of the site where Phil awakes and comes out of his hole. It is a popular spot for college kids to go to stay up all night to wait for Phil to come out of his hole.
To celebrate Groundhog’s Day, most of the college kids spend the day before and the day of Groundhog’s day drinking and parting with their friends. It is an adventure to climb up the hill to where Punxsutawney Phil is sleeping and watch him come out of his hole after sleeping all winter.
Every year, Groundhog’s Day becomes more and more commercialized. In Punxsutawney, they sell t-shirts, hats, stuffed animals, and coffee mugs.
Groundhog’s Day is an annual holiday that most people do not celebrate. We all know winter is going to be sticking around for another few weeks, but do we really need to be reminded of it by a groundhog?
Punxsutawney Phil has a protected pen so people can do no harm to him. His hole is surrounded by a fence, and is constantly being watched so no one tries to hurt him. He is protected now because someone stole another groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil a few years ago.
Punxsutawney is known for one thing, and that is Groundhog’s Day’s Punxsutawney Phil. So, they keep him safe and protected so that every February 2nd, people from all over the United States can came to see Phil pop out of his hole to see if he is going to see his shadow. Every year, another 6 more weeks of winter is predicted.
Groundhog’s Day is an event that Punxsutawney looks forward to every year to help their economy. If Phil were to leave Punxsutawney, they would be lost without him.
