Fathers Day - A time to celebrate your Dad

farthers-day.jpgFathers Day is celebrated every year in the warm summer month of June in the United States. It is a time in which we honor our Dad and make them feel special while celebrating their place in our life. It is not only a time in which our Dads can be honored, but for all men who act as a father figure such as stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers and other male adults in the family.

You may often wonder where Fathers Day originated from and why. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t very clear. Some people believe that it began in 1908 with a church service in West Virginia, others say that the first celebration was held in Vancouver, Washington. The idea was mostly strongly pushed by Sonora Smart Dodd who came up with the idea for Fathers Day after listening to a sermon in 1909. She was solely raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart after her mother passed away. Senora wanted her father to know how much she loved him and appreciated him and how special he was to her after all, he was the one that made all of the sacrifices for her and in her eyes, was a courageous, selfless and loving man. Since her father was born in the month of June, she wanted the celebration to be in that month. The first Fathers Day celebration was held on June 19, 1920 in Spokane, Washington and this was supported by President Calvin Coolidge in 1924. It was made official in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation which declared the third Sunday of June as Fathers Day and he put the official stamp on it, even though it was already being celebrated for a half a century at the time.

There are many ways you can celebrate Fathers Day to show your father just how much he means to you. When it all comes down to it, Dads are happy with just about anything. It may not be something he’ll ever use or even in time remember, but he’ll most certainly appreciate being thought of. You can get him a very special gift for Fathers Day just by thinking about it interests, things he’s done and your relationship with him. Maybe he’s interested in hunting or fishing, or he’s into cars or computers. Was he in the military? Did he play any musical instruments when he was younger, or does he still? Is there something that they two of you have shared or done together when you were a child?

Whatever you decide on to celebrate Fathers Day, it’ll be something he’s sure to love and treasure forever.
