During the holidays, we hear popular carols where ever we go. At times, you may find yourself merrily humming along with the music. We may remember a phrase or two of our favorite Christmas song lyrics, although most of us forget words through the years. Just like when we stop believing in the magic of Santa. Seeing the Christmas song lyrics that we know and love in black and white help us to recall the feeling behind the words once more.
Some Christmas song lyrics have a sobering effect on us. Stan Rogers wrote the words to the hit, ‘First Christmas,’ in the year 1979. This is not your typical Christmas song lyrics that are sung during the holiday time. We have, or will, experience many feelings captured by Stan Rogers.
The second verse tells a sad story of a man who is working far from home. “3,000 miles away, now he’s working Christmas day, making double time for minding the store. Well, he always said, he’d make it on his own, He’s spending Christmas Eve alone. First Christmas away from home.” Another verse talks of a lonely man in a nursing home;
“When the “old girl” passed away, he fell apart more every day. Each had always kept the other pretty well, but the kids all said the nursing home was best, cause he couldn’t live alone. First Christmas away from home.”
Christmas song lyrics can bring joy and laughter to the winter season. Like when happy children are free to sing “Merry Christmas” at the top of their lungs, and not get in trouble. An example of Christmas song lyrics which make us laugh like a child is ‘Nuttin’ For Christmas’ by S. Tepper, and R. Bennett in 1955. This title is explained by the antics that mischievous child sang;
“I broke my bat on Johnny’s head; somebody snitched on me.”
“I hid a frog in sister’s bed; somebody snitched on me.”
“I spilled some ink on Mommy’s rug; somebody snitched on me.”
“I made Tommy eat a bug; somebody snitched on me.”
“I put a tack on teacher’s chair; somebody snitched on me.”
“I tied a knot in Susie’s hair; somebody snitched on me.”
“I did a dance on Mommy’s plants, climbed a tree and tore my pants, filled the sugar bowl with ants….” you get the picture.
Lastly, some Christmas song lyrics help us remember times in history. ‘Snoopy vs. The Red Baron’ by the Royal guardsmen in 1966 is one of a series taking off from Snoopy and his fantasy about aerial dog fights with German W.W. 1 flying ace Baron Von Richthofen.
