When it comes to types of wine I don’t consider myself a connoisseur by any means. But I do enjoy a glass with my dinner or just sitting around in the evening at home. . There is a suggestion for every meal you eat although it is not necessary to follow these guidelines I know that I don’t. There are only a couple types of wine that I will drink.
Winemakers use hundreds of different varieties of grapes to make the different types of wine. The grape that is used is the most important ingredient in the taste. Listed below is a large variety of different types of wine and a brief description. I also give a food recommendation goes best with that particular type.
Cabernet Sauvignon, made from the world’s most renowned grapes produce red wine. You can find the best cabernet sauvignon in Bordeaux, France, even though it is grown in most of major vineyards including Napa Valley California; best served with full flavored meat, lamb or poultry.
Chardonnay the world’s most often purchased type of dry white is grown in nearly every area of the world. These types of wine are aged in oak barrels and are rich in strong flavor and aroma. This type has a fruity character.
Another type fruity character is Chenin Blanc. This type is made from one of the most widely grown grapes in California. This does not age well and should be opened and consumed within a year of bottling for fresh flavor. Because of the high acidity these types of wine should be paired with food that is equally acidity such as lemon or tomato dishes and with foods that need acid to reduce their intensity like cheese dishes, duck and coconut.
Other types of wine that are acidity are Pinot Blanc. The grape produces a soft fruity dry bottle. It is compared to Chardonnay
Fruity types of wine like Merlot have low tannin and have a smooth sweet flavor. It has hints of black currant, cherry and mint. These types of wine are served best with pork, turkey, grilled meats and tuna.
Two types of wine that are crisp and dry or rich and sweet depending on the region that the grapes are grown. The drier of the two go best with mushroom dishes vegetable quiches and smoked salmon. The sweet wines are best served with rich pates.
The last kind I will talk about are Zinfandels. There are a couple different kinds of Zinfandel which is my personal favorite. These have a hint of blackberry cherry and black pepper. It is a very versatile type, served best with it Italian, Asian, Mexican, and barbecued foods.
This is just a few of the different types of wine you can find. Whether you prefer red or white or somewhere in between, remember your rights. You’re right to choose.
