You have seen the television reviews, read the articles in the paper, and heard from other people about a Low Carb Diet? You probably have heard good things – great amounts of weight loss in short amounts of time. You have also heard the bad things – major restrictions on the kinds of food and that after awhile you go crazy with cravings. Part of the reason that people go crazy with cravings is that being on a Low Carb Diet is very restrictive.
Carbohydrates are nutrients found in food that turn into sugar in the body. A lot of people have an addiction to these “carbs”. Foods such as bread, bagels, pasta, and surprisingly fruit are all foods that contain carbs. It is also surprising to find that almost all processed food contains sugar in some form or another. This helps to feed peoples addictions and why a Low Carb Diet can be hard for many people.
If you choose to try a Low Carb Diet, you first need to sit down in front of your computer and get some information. There are also many books at your library on this subject. You will also need to invest in a good cookbook. It is also a good idea to get nutritional information from a dietician about the intake of calories and the right amount of foods to eat. A Low Carb Diet is a great choice for diabetics. It is highly recommended to start with a journal to help you keep track of what you eat everyday.
The key to a Low Carb Diet is the cutting out of all sugar. For those that are sugar addicts, this will be a hard transition. Most of the books recommend that for two weeks, you cut out everything that has sugar in it. For example, breakfast could include eggs (prepared any way), bacon, ham, (any meat at all), and fruits that contain no sugar. Coffee should be excluded because of the caffeine. Orange juice is also a no-no. Basically water is the best choice. You can eat as much protein as you want on a Low Carb Diet. For those that are meat lovers, this sounds great. But after a few weeks, bacon doesn’t look delicious anymore.
By rights, this sounds easy. Eating tons of protein like chicken cut out the pasta, potatoes and fruit and the work will be easy and you will be healthy, and the weight will fall off. This is not necessarily the case. You will also need to exercise at least three times a week to help with a Low Carb Diet. For people that have Diabetes, a Low Carb Diet is a good choice. For everyone else, this author is not sure whether or not you can do this forever.
