The company got its start back in the 1970s when founders, Pete and Laura Wakeman, were in college trying to earn some summer spending money. They set up a small roadside stand in their hometown of Durham, Connecticut., and began baking and selling fresh-ground whole-wheat breads.
After graduating from college, Pete and Laura traveled and soon found themselves in Montana in the middle of wheat country. In 1976, the couple opened the first Great Harvest Bread Co. in Montana. They sold all twelve loaves on their first day. Business grew and a loyal following of fans of their whole wheat products was born.
Word spread quickly. Soon neighbors were wondering how they could go about starting up their own Great Harvest Bread Co. The next bakery opened in nearby Kalispell in 1978. The third opened in Spokane, Washington. The franchise office was founded in Dillon in 1983, and the original bakery was sold to Pete Rysted, who is still the owner today. Slowly, the Great Harvest Bread Co. began to grow into one of the country’s best whole grain bakeries.
Twenty-five years later, President and CEO Mike Ferretti and five other partners have taken over the business. Ferretti has been passionate about preserving the Great Harvest Bread Co. philosophy, and he’s spearheaded a new focus on the business owners. Since 2001, more programs to both build and protect the businesses of the owners have been created.
Today, bakeries across the country are now implementing an all new signature sandwich and panini program. Other bakeries are introducing full service coffee and espresso bars, thanks to a new partnership with a specialty California coffee roaster.
The Great Harvest Bread Co. has even higher hopes for the future, although their mission will still remain the same.
