Yoga clothing - What to wear

Yoga clothing Have you recently decided to take yoga? Wondering what to wear? As a beginner it is not necessary to spend money on yoga clothing, at least not until you are sure that this is something you wish to continue with on into the future. And let’s hope you do.

Appropriate yoga clothing will make your exercise program more successful. To start, you will need comfortable, breathable clothes. Choose a loose fitting simple pair of sweatpants or any exercise pants. Shorts are ok too. Do not wear slick lycra pants as this may cause you to slip. Wear a shirt that is slightly form fitted or at least one that won’t slide. Some poses are with your head below your hips and your shirt can slip down. Tight clothing will not allow you to move comfortable into the positions. And large baggy clothing will just get in the way. No zippers or buttons to lie on. No hoods. This is all that is necessary as yoga is usually done barefoot.

There are some classes in what is called “gentle yoga” where the positions are not quite as important. The goal is gentle stretching. In these classes the participants can nearly dose off as they become so wonderfully relaxed. They find they need to dress a little warmer. Or even bring a blanket for those last minutes of total relaxation.

There is, of course, a huge selection of online stores to purchase yoga clothing; many are very expensive just because they are “yoga clothing” and many are expensive because they are well made with natural fibers such as cotton or hemp.

Hemp yoga clothing wears very well. The fibers are long which means longer garment life and more absorbency. It holds its shape and prevents garments from stretching out. It is extremely comfortable. The more it is used the softer it gets. It is breathable. Some say it just doesn’t wear out.

Cotton is also an excellent choice for indoor exercising.  It is comfortable, soft and breathable. One does not want to be sweating and sticky as one tries to move. Shop around. If you choose to purchase just the pants first, do choose a pair that you can wear at other times. Yoga clothing is very comfortable and you may find yourself choosing your yoga outfit for everyday!

A recent search on-line discovered an interesting company that not only sells yoga clothing but clothing for all styles of living. Their prices are good and their mission statement is admirable. Go to http://www.gaiam.com/.  This store uses organic cotton and has factories overseas where guidelines are followed for hours, safety, and wages. Basic yoga clothing can also be found at your local Penny’s and Sears stores.
