Hollister clothing was invented by Abercrombie and Fitch in 2000 and has since then become a popular choice among pre-teens, teenagers and young adults, especially in southern California. It’s similar along the lines of Aeropostale, Old Navy and American Eagle, only their goal is to be slightly cheaper. Hollister clothing opened its first store in Broward County and people flocked to it like mad. What they found was the clothes were not only hip and cool, but very affordable. Hollister clothing is mostly geared towards a “west coast surfer” type of style.
Contrary to popular belief, Hollister clothing was not named after the California city. It was actually named after a ranch, which is a prime surfing spot near Santa Barbara, California. Although it was established in 2000, they use the date of establishment as being 1922, and have the number 22 on many of their items.
If you walk into a Hollister clothing store, you’ll find that the layout is much like an Abercrombie and Fitch store. But, the look is also different from Abercrombie and Fitch’s east coast stores which are fake palm trees and shuttered windows that immediately make you feel like you’re in a west coast beach village. The entrance of the store has a teal wooden boardwalk leading into the “Dudes” (men’s) and “Bettys” (women’s) side of the store. There are wooden poles that hold up tile roofing over the boardwalk. When you enter the store, you’ll find leather chairs with tables that have the latest trendy magazines on them. Dim lighting shines on the Hollister clothing which gives the store a pleasant, laid back atmosphere. The music plays very loud to give you that California-appeal type feel.
When you shop at a Hollister clothing store, you have the opportunity to participate in a rewards program called “Club Cali.” A first time cardholder starts off with a red card which has levels of $0 - $500. Once that person hits the $500 mark, they are sent a personalized gold card. When they reach a level of $1000, the gold automatically becomes platinum. This program gives one point for every dollar that is spent at a Hollister clothing store. The cool thing about this program is that you can trade these points in for merchandise such as surfboards and autographed CD’s. Unfortunately though, as of March 24, 2006, this “Club Cali” program is going to be discontinued.
If you have never been to a Hollister clothing store and this sounds like something you’d be interested in and clothes you’d like to wear, check out their website at www.hollisterco.com, go to the “store locater” page and see if there are any locations that are near you!
