The 60’s were definitely groovy. It’s amazing how the trend of clothes from that time has evolved into today and some are still into hippie clothing. Well, if you’re going to do it, it’s best to do it right.
Here are some important things to remember when you’re going for the hippie clothing look:
Nothing completes hippie clothing better than a flower in your hair. If that’s not possible, try a little thing headband. Keep your hair long and “unkempt.” Now, I’m not saying dirty, you want to keep it clean, but you also want to complete your look with the free-flowing style of hair.
An example of hippie clothing for a woman includes hip hugger or bell bottom jeans (don’t forget a belt!) or even fringed bottom jeans; a halter top; a headband with a flower; ankle bells for around your ankle; and maybe some beads around your neck. Of course, one of the symbols of hippie clothing is the peace symbol. Wear it and wear it proud. Peasant blouses are also a great piece of hipping clothing to have, along with granny or baby doll dresses and maybe you want to consider adding some hemp bags or purses.
For men, hippie clothing isn’t really all that different. You can never go wrong with t-shirts; add a fringed leather vest on top of it and try some granny glasses to go with your mix. A combat style vest is also appropriate and of course, you don’t want to forget your bell bottomed pants and leather sandals, no socks. Afro hair was definitely the style for African Americans. The bigger, the better!
Don’t forget your tie dyes! They are a staple of your hippie clothing and are essential. No, you don’t buy them either, you make them! It’s best to find a dye that’s appropriate, twist or gather the fabric you want to tie dye, secure it with a rubber band and throw it into a pot. You may not get great multicolored patterns but you will have an authentic made tie dyed shirt!
If you insist on taking the easy way out to find your hippie clothing, there are dozens of stores you can shop at and buy them directly. My best suggestion is to shop at a second-hand store. You may be pleasantly surprised at the treasures you can find there! I know when I was in college, it was one of my favorite stores. Good luck putting together your look. Peace!
