Free Crochet Patterns - Crocheting tips and pattern information

free-crochet-patters.jpgWhen I think of crocheting I think of doilies and afghans, and my beloved grandmother. My “Grammie” would always be crocheting. I have several of her doilies and an afghan in my home that I treasure. My grammie made it look easy, but it actually takes some practice to get the hang of this craft.

Crocheting was thought to have begun in the 1800s in Europe as a less expensive version of lace. Until 1950, crocheting was done using only thread in the round or filet pattern and worked in rows of open or closed mesh to create the patterns. Early hooks were made of bone, ivory, brass or hardwood. However, by 1900, steel hooks were produced, followed later by plastic hooks. In the 1950s, crocheters began using yarn to create less delicate clothing items and items for the home. Crocheting reached a peak of popularity in the late sixties and early seventies, but has been making a comeback as the younger generation today has taken a new interest in sewing and hand crafts.

If you want to learn about crocheting and would like to get some free crochet patterns, here are a few tips:

First you need to purchase a needle and some thread or yarn. If you are using thread, choose a needle between sizes 12 to 0 with 0 being the largest. Thread needles are used to make doilies, tablecloths, bedspreads and decorations. Afghan needles are larger needles and are used with yarn. Their sizes range from I to Q. It would be best to begin using larger needles with yarn because they make larger stitches and are easier to work with when working on free crochet patterns.
