For those people who lived their teenage years and early twenties, the 80’s fashion can make some people cringe and others smile in fond memory. 80’s fashion was highly influenced by movies and music, television shows and stars, and this was the first generation to experience MTV.
Such stars influenced big hair as Madonna and there was also a hold over from the late 70’s and the Farrah Fawcett look. The bigger the better! The feathered look was in, using lots of hairspray, which even a windstorm wouldn’t have been able to move! This made it possible to go roller-skating, wearing leg warmers, and at the end of the night to still have hair that stayed in place.
80’s fashion had many areas of influence. The punk rockers would wear parachute pants, tee shirts and wild hair. These kids would be seen playing video games in the arcades and were sort of scary looking.
Another facet of 80’s fashion was the “preps”. These kids wore the alligator polo shirts in wild colors, lived to watch Don Johnson on Miami Vice and imitate his tee shirt look with the oversized white blazer.
There was also a look in the 80’s fashion that came from a strange singer called Boy George. Nobody was very sure exactly what sex he was and his style was mostly copied by long dredd lock like looks.
Madonna also heavily influenced 80’s fashion. Her wide belts and funky clothes definitely set a standard for a generation of teens. She wore bandannas in her hair, funky colors and mismatching clothing became her style and many a teen copied her.
Duran Duran also helped to set the teen style of 80’s fashion. They had high hair styles and wore a lot of suits with skinny ties.
If you watch styles today, some of the 80’s fashion is making a comeback. In the news tabloids, you will see many clothes looking a lot like they did back then. The polo shirts are huge, as is the chunky belts and shoes, and hair seems to be getting bigger again. Time always seems to make fashion repeat itself.
If you were a teen during the 80’s fashion craze, you may like the fact that some of the more tailored looking clothes are coming back into fashion, but each generation always changes it a little bit. Today’s kids want a faded look to their clothes, while twenty years ago, you had to have the bluest jeans and the crispest looking shirts, ah well, and times they do change!
