Girl Scouts - Get involved!

girl-scouts.jpgIn 1912, a woman by the name of Juliette Gordon Low started the Girl Scouts Council of America. Her dream was for all young women to have a dream, grow with confidence, make friends, and develop into productive young women. A lot has changed since 1912, but the core beliefs that she founded the Girl Scouts on almost 100 years ago still holds true. While way back then, girl scouts were taught how to be only good wives and mothers; today’s Girl Scouts are taught how to be confident and productive women and that they can become anything they want! If any women was in Girl Scouts, most can still recite the Girl Scouts promise (this is also done with the first three fingers on your right hand raised together): On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, to help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout Law.

If you would like to join, begin your search on the Internet in your home. There are many areas for many ages of girls to join. At the kindergarten level, she would start as a Daisy; ages 5-6. The next level is called the Brownie; ages 6-8. Next is Junior; ages 8-11. And the final age group is girls 11-17 and they experience scouting through Studio 2B. The best place for information is on the website is www:girlscouts.com. The site will have forms to fill out and also direct you local troop. Most of the time, information is sent home from school or is found in local newspapers. If you as an adult are interesting in being a helper, are willing to donate time, they have many opportunities to join and help, providing you with training.

There are many fun things to do within the Girl Scouts program. Probably the most famous is the annual cookies that are for sale. In America, this has become a much look forwarded to event each year. Who can resist the Thin Mints! Scouting will also teach girls through the patch program; which are different things they learn how to do through training and once accomplished, will earn a patch to put on their shirts. These skills are varied: from horseback riding, cooking, sewing, etc.

Girl Scouts also have many different summer camps to attend. Some are just day camps and others are sleepovers, where they learn to built campfires and sleep in tents.

This is a great opportunity for all young women; find a local troop and become a scout today!
