An activity that is always fun for any occasion any, for all ages, that includes the whole family is to play games. As a child I remember my family and I would play games a lot and my husband and are trying to do the same for our kids. With the busy schedules of today, it’s sometimes hard to fit in time to play games. Consider having a family game night once a week or every other week to play games as a family.
There are classics for all ages that have been around for years that are still lots of fun. The common ones for preschool age children are Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, and Cootie. One of these is often the first game a child receives. They were my favorites when I was a young child, and they’re still around today. My children have played these as well. Young children also enjoy Hungry, Hungry Hippos, Don’t Break the Ice, Don’t Spill the Beans, Cat’s Eye, and Memory.
For the older child the classics include Sorry, Yahtzee, Life, Uno and Clue, which are all still around today. I can remember my brother and I would play games, especially Yahtzee, for what seemed like hours on rainy days. Mouse Trap, Trouble, and Simon are also popular with older children. As a teenager, I enjoyed playing Trivial Pursuit. Now there are so many versions of Trivial Pursuit out there you can find a version to please anyone. We own the Star Wars Trivial Pursuit, the standard version and the DVD version (my husband and son are both Star Wars fans). The DVD games have become very popular since they first started being sold a couple of years ago.
It seems that whatever is the hot toy, cartoon or TV show is made into a game. When we play games, my son often chooses a Hulk game, a Spiderman game, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game, a Lego game or a Spongebob Squarepants game. Of course, my daughter chooses Bratz or Barbie, and my youngest likes, Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, and the Wiggles. Whatever your child likes, the game and toy companies have most likely made a game out of it.
As an adult, my husband and I like to play games at family get togethers. We often play games at family events and when we get together with friends. Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Scategories, Pictionary, and Taboo are some of the most common when we play games.
Start a family game night today and spend precious time with your kids. When they get older they will remember the time spent together to play games and may start the tradition with their own family someday.
