Child Care - Finding the right provider

child-care.jpgIf children are born into a family with both a mother and a father, where the mother doesn’t need to work and can stay home with her babies, I consider that lucky. In today’s world, with the rising costs of everything, parents need to turn to others for child care. It’s an extreme difficult decision that is sometimes the harsh reality people are faced with. Of course, parents want quality child care for their babies. Here are some suggestions on how to go about finding that.

Start looking early. Whether you are trying to decide between a public child care center or someone’s home, take all of the time you can so you can do the necessary research.

Make some phone calls to your public offices. Find out of there are any licensing requirements in the area that you live as well as doing any background checks and researching to see if there have been any complaints made and or licensing violations. Do you think you are going to need child care financial assistance? You should also find out if there are any programs available in your area that offer this because many times there are.

After you narrow down some locations, it is extremely important to visit the center or the home where the child care will be. How many adults are available for the number of children that are there? Of course, the fewer the children, the better. Babies need far more attention and the adult taking care of your baby should have no more than three other babies to take care of. The older your children, the less adults that are needed.

What are the provider’s qualifications, training and education? Do they have any degrees in child care and have they had any special training? Often times, it is wonderful if you can find caregivers who regularly attend workshops and are always improving their child care skills. Most importantly, is the child care provider accredited by a national organization? This is important to know because it means that the provider has met the standards that are higher than most state licensing requirements.

The work most certainly isn’t over after you make a decision on child care for your children. It is very important to stay involved with the caregiver. Try to have meetings regularly and ask plenty of questions, maybe even try to volunteer some time when you can. Visit your children if possible and join in special events if they have them. If you are visiting and trying to participate, it sends a message to the provider in that it shows them you are interested and that what your children are doing and learning is extremely important.
