Tinkerbell (whose name is copyright protected) is a fictional fairy, also called a pixie, from the popular novel and play, Peter Pan. She is not always on her best behavior and is sometimes a little vindictive, but other time she is very helpful and kind to Peter, who she is very fond of. It’s been said that the extremes in her personality are due to the fact that because a fair is so small, she is incapable of holding more than one feeling at a time. Tinkerbell is famous for spreading her pixie dust and making people fly.
When the play is presented on stage, Tinkerbell is usually represented by a spotlight. She is a flying point of light which is beamed from the offstage. On the big screen Tinkerbell has been portrayed by well known actresses such as Virginia Browne Faire (in the 1942 silent Peter Pan movie), Julie Roberts (in the 1991 movie Hook) and Ludivine Sagnier (in the 2003 Peter Pan movie).
Tinkerbell is sometimes thought of as the mascot for The Walt Disney Company. She’s appeared in many commercials to spread her fairy dust from her magic wand. Tinkerbell also appeared in the television series House of Mouse along with her other fellow Disney characters and also in the video game series Kingdom Hearts. She is also seen in Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color and The Wonderful World of Disney. One of her nightly performances can be seen in Disneyland and Disneyworld where she flies through the sky during the summer to usher in the evenings traditional fireworks. When I visited Disneyworld in Florida many moons ago, I remember this display of excitement just as it was yesterday. Seeing her “fly” across the night sky is an image that had me awestruck as a child. I wanted to be able to fly just like her!
Tinkerbell is an icon among children and as she can be found on shirts, lunch boxes, backpacks and accessories. Children who adore the Peter Pan stories and love to read page by page can search for and find her books in their favorite bookstores or at their favorite book site online. If searching for keepsakes to keep at home, there are many collectibles available such as charms, pins and keychains. She is also popular among older teen girls and young females who find her design fascinating and meaningful and have it tattooed on their bodies.
Tinkerbell is still popular as ever and is still loved by fans of all ages.
