Peanut Butter Jelly Time - A goofy, silly phenomenon

Peanut Butter Jelly TimePeanut Butter Jelly Time is a silly song and Internet phenomenon that emerged in the early 2000s.  Peanut Butter Jelly Time is based upon a song recorded by the Buckwheat Boys.  The song includes a well known animation piece of a dancing banana (known as emoticon) moving back and forth to the song’s repetitive chorus.  In some versions of the animation, the song’s lyrics are displayed on screen.  Many versions of this Macromedia Flash clip were made, and some of the alternate versions were put on popular Flash websites such as New grounds.

The first appearance of Peanut Butter Jelly Time on television was on the episode of Ed called “The Wedding,” which was part of the show’s third season and aired on November 13, 2002.  Jennifer Bradley shows Ed this clip online to boost his spirits because he is despondent over Carol’s upcoming marriage to Dennis.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time was used on the animated TV show The Proud Family in season two, which aired on June 20, 2003.  It also appeared on The Proud Family soundtrack album.  The song and dance was re-enacted by Brian in an episode of the Family Guy which aired on November 20, 2005.  A small controversy erupted over the use of the song and dance when the creator of the song stated online that he was bothered by the fact that he was given no notice of its usage in the episode.  By the end of the year, the controversy was resolved.

A spoof of the animation occasionally appears on Inside the NBA and features a cutout of Charles Barkley’s head superimposed on a very large male dancer.

The DJ Chip Man and Ray-Lo remixed the song in 2006, which then emerged on the Internet as a parody of Kevin Federline, Brittney Spears’ deadbeat husband.  It features Federline dancing to what was originally his single “PopoZao” but replaced with the Ying Yang Twins’ remix of a short variation of Peanut Butter Jelly Time.

Many networks have used the Peanut Butter Jelly Time for commercials, such as Nickelodeon, who used the same beat for their breakfast time song.
