One of my all-time favorite musical artists is U2. They have been around for over a quarter of a century now, and are still producing some of the best, most compelling melodies and music lyrics today. I love listening to U2 and really listening to the music lyrics. U2’s songs have meaning and often make you think.
One of my favorite U2 songs is “All I Want is You” from their Rattle and Hum album. I think I read somewhere that Bono wrote this song about Jesus. I often think of this song in that way especially when life gets overwhelming. Bono often writes songs about his faith. Another example of this is the song is from their latest album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, called “Original of the Species.” I don’t now if Bono wrote this from a spiritual standpoint or not, but when I listen to the song I listen from that perspective.
Perhaps one of U2’s most popular song is “With or Without You.” This song was released back in the late eighties, but I still know all the music lyrics when it comes on the radio. It is one of those songs, for me, that takes me right back to that year, that time in my life. A lot of U2 songs do that. “Sunday Bloody Sunday” was probably one of the first U2 songs I heard. The music lyrics talk about war, pain, and sadness, relating to the civil war within U2’s home country of Ireland that raged for a long time. Although I couldn’t begin to relate to war, I think we can all relate to the feelings that the music lyrics evoke.
I’ve heard Bono talk about the song “Beautiful Day.” He said he wrote this song from the standpoint of a man who has lost everything, but still stays “It’s a beautiful day.” How much can this song affect our daily outlook on life?
A well known U2 song, which I’ve heard contemporary Christian artists perform, is “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” The music lyrics to this song speak so much, because how many of us are looking for something—happiness, love, good fortune, wealth, answers to our problems. Again, I think Bono is using this song to share his faith, hinting that we can continue searching, but if we don’t have faith in God, we will continue searching.
This is just a few of U2’s music lyrics that have touched me. U2 has obviously touched millions of other people all over the world, because they are still making great albums. If you are a long-time fan, take a listen to your U2 albums, and listen closely to the music lyrics. If you are not familiar with U2, I would highly recommend that you buy their CDs and take a listen for yourself.
