There are many songs that have been written about the moon or something pertaining to it. Since the beginning of man, people have always been fascinated with the moon. It has been an interesting subject of awe and folklore. Some people associate a full moon with strange behavior, crime and lunacy, but what about all of the good things associated with it? There have been songs written that spoke of the love attraction that people have to the moon. In 1801, one of the most famous composers in the history of music wrote one of his most popular works. Ludwig van Beethoven dedicated Moonlight Sonata to his 17 year old pupil at the time, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, with who he was in love with. It wasn’t until years later, 1832 it is believed, that Ludwig Rellstab, a German poet, compared this music to the moonlight that shines on the end of Lake Lucerne. Since that point in time, Moonlight Sonata has remained the official title of the sonata. Moonlight Sonata is without a doubt one of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most popular pieces of work and it is still frequently performed and recorded in present times.

Another tune written about the moonlight was in 1922. It was a song called “Underneath the Mellow Moon,” written by Wendell Hall. It’s a beautiful waltz and is very soothing. When you hear it, it almost makes you feel like you are sitting outside on a beautiful night with the moonlight shining down on you.

Moonlight on the Mississippi was written in 1913 by Grace LeBoy. This song can be best described as being kind of raggy, yet upbeat. The song tells about the story of a man and a woman who part ways, where she sails off down the Mississippi River reminding him of the times that they had together. He’s left to sit on there with the moonlight shining down on the Mississippi River thinking about everything. It’s a very pretty song!
