Marilyn Monroe - A true overcomer

marilyn-monroe.jpgWhat obstacles are you facing? They may pale in light of what Marilynn Monroe overcame. Marilyn Monroe, was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. She overcame many obstacles and rose to stardom in the 1950’s.

The first obstacle being she was illegitimate, not knowing who her real father was. Marilyn Monroe was later baptized Norma Jeane Baker due to not being able to determine his identity.

The second obstacle Marilyn Monroe faced was having a mother afflicted with mental illness. Gladys had been a film cutter at RKO studios, but due to psychological problems, she lost her job and was eventually committed to a mental institution. The fear of this happening to her haunted her throughout her life.

The third obstacle that Marilyn Monroe faced was an unstable home life. She spent most of her childhood in foster homes and orphanages until 1937. Then she moved in with family friend Grace McKee Goddard. In 1942, Grace’s husband was transferred to the East Coast in 1942, and the couple left her behind since they couldn’t afford to take 16 year old with them. She was then faced with two options, return to the orphanage or get married.

On June 19, 1942 she married her 21-year-old neighbor Jimmy Dougherty, whom she dated for six months. It appeared that they were happy together until he joined the Merchant Marines and was sent to the South Pacific in 1944. Since then Marilyn Monroe had many failed marriages to overcome.

But in spite all these obstacles, Marilyn Monroe became a Hollywood star that was admired around the world for her vulnerability and innocence coupled with sensuality. Her glow, energy and beauty endeared her to the world over. She dominated the age of movie stars to become the most famous woman of the 20th Century, as an actress and highly admired and photogenic public figure.

Her tragic end came as an untimely death, deemed a suicide, that made headline news and is still a controversy to this day.
