Lost is a show on the ABC network which is about the survivors of a plane crash on a mysterious desert island. In the fall of 2004, Lost made its debut and became a huge success almost instantly.
Season one of Lost featured 24 episodes. It basically began when the plane crash stranded the surviving passengers, which forced them to work together to stay alive. Throughout the season though, mysteries began to unfold and their survival began to be threatened by things such as a buried hatch in the ground, an unknown creature of unknown size which roams the island and the motives of this group of people on the island known as the “Others.”
Season two of Lost began in fall of 2005. It begins 44 days after the crash. It featured several new characters such as Libby, Mr. Eko and Ana-Lucia Cortez. Also introduced were some of the inhabitants of the island including Desmond along with the Hanso Foundation, which is possibly responsible for the strange happenings on the island.
Lost has several elements which are recurring. They make the series very suspenseful and some help to offer a better understanding of the story.
One of these elements is the color black and color white. This is noted in the pilot episode of Lost with the description of backgammon, as well as when Locke appears as an image in one of Claire’s nightmares about her unborn baby, where he has one black eye and one white eye.
There are also significant numbers which appear throughout the series such as 4, 18, 15, 16, 23 and 42. It is believed that these numbers are cursed. These numbers also appear on medicine bottles and on a mural inside the Initiative’s Station Three. They also appear quite often throughout the lives of the survivors both before and after the crash.
Because of the complexity of the series, fans of Lost have speculated and tried to come up with theories about the nature of the island, the “Others,” the meaning of the numbers and the basic reasons for the crash and the survival of the passengers.
In 2005, Lost won several Emmy awards, specifically for Outstanding Television Series, Outstanding Director of a Television Series, Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Music Composition for a Series and Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series. In 2006, it won a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series. Also in 2006, it won a Screen Actors Guild, a Producers Guild and a Writers Guild of America.
