The I Love Lucy show premiered on TV in 1951. It ran from 1951 through 1957. It is also the only series on television that has never been off the air since its inception! The I Love Lucy show was a pioneer for its time because it was the first show to showcase a woman in the lead role! Lucille Ball played a wacky housewife, Lucy McGillicuddy Ricardo, who along with her Cuban bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo, played by real life husband Desi Arnaz, would get into all kinds of trouble, with the help of Ethel and Fred Mertz, played by Vivian Vance and William Frawley, who were their best friends and landlords.
The I Love Lucy show centered on normal domestic happenings, i.e. post dating a check, children, a party, home economy, and then through bizarre and hilarious circumstances, would get blown way out of proportion! Fred and Ethel were also part of the antics of each of the episodes. The gut busting laughs that always ensued made I Love Lucy one of the most popular shows of all time! The slapstick comedy that Lucille Ball is famous for (besides the color of her hair), paved a career for future female comedians such as Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett.
The I Love Lucy show was and is still popular because of the timeless entertainment it offers. The chemistry between Lucy and Ricky was great – you could definitely believe that they were married (mainly because they were married), and it was great to watch Lucy and Ethel interact as best friends and help each other out and Ethel many a time saved Lucy from herself! The cinematography was fantastic for it’s time, and the other new innovation that I Love Lucy started was reruns.
The I Love Lucy show has been on for decades and the great part is it’s still funny. We all have grown up watching this show. And whether Lucy gets caught in the candy factory eating the profits or is in a huge tub squashing grapes, it’s still as funny today as it was almost 60 years ago. Her signature whine and her weird thinking method to try to break into the music business constantly confounded her husband.
I Love Lucy can now be found on TV land channel on cable. If you haven’t tried this show yet, it is a definite feel good, laughing out loud funny show!
