Grammy Awards - This year’s big winners

grammy-awards.jpgThe 48th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony was held February 8, celebrating the best in music over the twelve month period of October 2004 – September 2005. The night’s big winner at the Grammy Awards was U2, who won five including Song of the Year for “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own,” and Album of the Year for “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.” They also won for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Album. U2 is no stranger to the Grammy Awards, having won many in the past two decades.

Kelly Clarkson, the very first American Idol winner, picked up two Grammy Awards, Best Pop Vocal Album for “Breakaway” and Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for “Since U Been Gone.” Best Male Pop Vocal went to Stevie Wonder for “From the Bottom of My Heart.”

Record of the Year honors at the Grammy Awards went to Green Day for their single “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” Personally, I was always confused about the difference between Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Record or the Year honors goes to the artist and producer; the Song of the Year award goes to the songwriters.

Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group went to Maroon Five for “This Love.” The Best New Artist Award at the Grammy Awards went to John Legend, who also won for best R&B Album.

Of course, the Grammy Awards show isn’t complete without memorable performances by the start. U2 performed their hits “Vertigo” and “One” with Mary J. Blige. Madonna opened the evening by performing her hit song “Hung Up” as only Madonna can do it. The performance featured break-dancers dancing with Madonna looking fit as ever in a purple leotard and corset.

A highlight of the night was an all-star performance featuring Sly Stone performing “I Want to Take You Higher.” Fantasia, Maroon 5, Ciara, Black-Eyed Peas, Joss Stone, John Legend, Van Hunt, and Aerosmith joined him onstage for a performance that brought the house down.

Fashion highs of the night included Christina Aguilera, who looked sexy and not trampy for a change. Beyonce always does it right, and this night was no different. She looked stunning in a beautiful bronze dress, arriving on the arm of boyfriend, Jay-Z. Another fashion winner was Gwen Stefani, nearly six months pregnant, and looking radiant in a leopard print dress.

The Grammy Awards are always entertaining, whether you watch it for the music, the stars, the fashion, or just to see if anything surprising happens.
