Eye Of The Tiger - Just a man?
The song, eye of the tiger, was made popular by a musical group known as Survivor. I think it’s great music but the lyrics? I’ll let you decide. The song’s lyrics go like this.
Risin’ up, back on the street, Did my time, took my chances, Went the distance, Now I’m back on my feet, Just a man and his will to survive, So many times, it happens too fast, You trade your passion for glory, Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past, You must fight just to keep them alive
It’s the Eye of the Tiger, It’s the thrill of the fight, Risin’ up to the challenge of our rivals, And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night, And he’s watching us all with the Eye of the Tiger
He goes on to sing about that he’s face to face with the “heat” and he’s haning in there and staying hungry. So he goes back on the street, killing just to survive. Then he talks about getting off the streets, and rising straight to the top. So he must have done something bad to get his gang to make him the top guy. He says how he went the distance and gave it his all and now he is reeping the benefits. He gets a thrill out of doing bad things to other people.
Now that you know some of words to the song, what do you think about the guy in this story? I’ll tell you what I think. He sounds like a real loser to me. I’d venture to say if he did his time, he just got out of jail and if he is back out on the streets, it’s because he has no place to go. Odds are he is probably uneducated and if he’s staying hungry, and if he’s out there stalking his prey, he is unemployed and out there looking for somebody to rob. Sounds to me like the guy will end up back in jail before long, unless he starts using his brains.
This song is also the theme song to the Rocky movies, staring Selvester Stalone. That movie is a inspirational movie to some. And to think that the theme song behind it is so offensive. Whoever picked the song, should have listened to the words more carefully to make sure they were choosing a song that sent the right message. The eye of the tiger song is not inspirational…however, high school locker rooms blast the music and it pushes the kids in the weight rooms to lift more and do a great job. So, to someone like me, its confusing, but still offensive, and by writing this article, I hope that other people can view the song the way I do.
I’d say the Eye of the Tiger is quite an offensive song to most of us hard working people who are just trying to make a living.
