True Duran Duran Fans
I was talking to my oldest friend yesterday, and by oldest I don’t mean as in age, I mean by the years I’ve known her. We go back to the first grade. She moved to a different school district in the days of sixth grade, but that didn’t affect our friendship. When we were in middle school, we both had one great love that had taken over our whole lives – Duran Duran. Her favorite member of Duran Duran was John and mine was Nick. We had our room plastered with posters, we would search for each and every album and bought every Tiger Beat, Sixteen, Teen Beat, etc. etc. magazine on the news stands that had their picture on the front or interview inside. Every body had shoes like they wore. Remember those white shoes? We were full blown Duranies, as they called every Duran Duran fan. I can remember the first time I heard “Hungry Like the Wolf,” and the first time I saw the video. That was when M TV was new to the world and Duran Duran were one of the first groups to pioneer the music video world.
My first Duran Duran concert
I remember being fourteen and going to my first concert (Duran Duran, of course). It was me and two friends, plus an extra ticket for my dad, who I’d volunteered to take us, unbeknownst to him. I don’t even remember how I got the tickets, because being fourteen I didn’t have any money or a credit card. I remember the day of the concert my dad being angry that I volunteered him to take us and refusing to take us. I sobbed hysterically in my mother’s arms; my world was shattered. However, some time later all was well, as apparently my mom had talked to my dad and he relented… so we left. When we got home, I think he was glad he went. Even though he had to endure three crazed 14 year-old girls for several hours, plus thousands of other 14 year-old crazed girls in the arena, he was truly entertained by his daughter. I spent two and one-half hours standing on a chair screaming at the top of my lungs with other people at duranduran as my father stood watching (and laughing) at me. Every once in a while he’ll bring up that night, with a chuckle.
The Duran Duran obsession comes to an official end
After a couple of years, I still liked Duran Duran, but wasn’t obsessed anymore. My interests, musically and otherwise, changed, but one thing did not. My friend back then is still my oldest and dearest friend now. Whenever I hear a Duran Duran song or see a show about the 80’s, I can’t help but think of her and all the fun we had in our teenage years. And who would have thought that Duran Duran would still be around today?
