Christian music lyrics are much more diverse than some people may think. Worship songs are more than just simple praise and worship songs from the contemporary church service, now they include old traditional hymns with more upbeat music and modern instruments. The Christian music lyrics in worship songs are for praising and worshipping God and to bring us into His presence. God loves it when His people praise him. Some worship songs are very simple and easy to sing and get into the spirit. Other Christian music lyrics in worship songs are very deep and need to be prayerfully pondered and meditated on to fully understand and receive the meaning.
Some of my favorite worship bands and artists are Anthony Skinner, the David Crowden band, Paul Baloche, and Daryl Evans. Christian music lyrics in the most popular top 40-type songs are very uplifting and inspirations. They are primarily meant for entertainment but many of them carry a powerful message. Some of these songs can also be sued for praise and worship, but usually the words tell a story, or teach us something. Bands like Casting Crowns, Third Day, Mercy Me and the Newsboys are good examples of this type of Christian music lyrics. These bands entertain and inspire me. Michael W. Smith and Rita Springer among others would fit both categories.
Then we have Christian music lyrics that don’t really carry a strong message, but they are clean and contain no abusive language or violence. However, an artist that may fit this category does release inspirational songs occasionally. Some of these bands are “crossover” bands and have become quite successful. Crossover means they get air time on secular radio (or television) as well as inspirational radio. They accumulate a secular fan base with the very subtle Christian music lyrics, and then the fans buy their CDs, go to concerts, and ultimately hear the more inspirational songs. Through Christian music lyrics, they eventually hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Reliant K, Switchfoot, Jump 5, and Stacy Orico among others have crossed over.
Rap, hip hop, R&B, rock, heavy metal, and even thrash bands are out there that produce songs with Christian music lyrics. There is a spiritual alternative for anyone, no matter what their particular taste in music. As long as it is in line with the Word of God and it can lead people to Christ, it’s okay in my book.
