The University of Pittsburgh, pa began in a log cabin on the edge of the American frontier. Hugh Henry a person of remarkable foresight and vision was the driving force behind the foundation. In 1909 the Pitt panther was adopted as the school mascot. The panther was adopted because it is a fearsome animal and indigenous to the area, it was historically noble, the panther is a happy accident of alliteration, panthers can be naturally gold in color thus matching the university of Pittsburgh colors and no other college had a panther mascot at the time. Over the past six years freshman registration has increased to the campus. They were applauded by the Middle States Commission in March 2002 for the great efforts and success they have had in improving both the quality and quantity of its freshman applicants. The Petersen Events Center was a reason the quality improved the student life.
