Summer school can be extremely beneficial to many students. It is not always for those who door poorly in college or university throughout a regular semester. Many times, students elect to take classes in summer school so they can get ahead on their credits or to make up for a classes or classes they were unable to take during the Fall or Spring semesters.
Some of the advantages of taking summer school courses are that the classes are usually much smaller than they are during a regular semester. Although the classes are on a more condensed schedule than normal, the environment is more relaxed and the instructors or professors are able to give more individual attention to the students than they normally could.
Summer school usually starts a month or so after a regular semester ends and lasts for eight weeks or so. Classes are held every day and they may go for an hour and a half each day instead of the normal fifty minutes they would during a regular semester. Although it is entirely up to the student how many credits they elect to take during summer school, if they are there to make up classes or repeat classes to get a better grade, it is not recommended that they overload their schedules. They should probably only take a maximum of two classes in order to devote as much time as they can to their studies.
Students in summer school are still able to take advantage of the opportunities and activities that are available to them during a regular semester, although again, most activities are limited because of the smaller amount of students who are there. They are still able to eat their meals on campus and have the learning resources available such as the library, student lounge, etc. If they are enrolled in classes, they are also still able to take jobs on campus if they wish to do so – this way they are able to work and attend summer school at the same time so they do not fall behind.
If you are a student and you feel that summer school would be beneficial to you, check with your local academic affairs office at your college or your Registrar’s office for additional information and to get a list of the classes that are available, an application for registration, and maybe to get recommendation of what summer school courses or programs would best meet your needs.
