What types of teaching jobs are out there? There are hundreds of schools which employ American, Canadian, and British teachers. The United States Department of Defense alone has over 220 international schools. Also, besides the private institutions, the United States Department of State has around 200 schools. Some curriculum will resemble typical American and British education; others will reflect the needs of the student body. If there are a high number of host country students attending, then courses will be offered in both the host language, and in English.

There are three basic types of schools which offer teaching jobs; United Nation sponsored, Independent International Institutions, and some owned by single corporations. The majority of Religious or Proprietary schools will have boarding houses on site. These tend to be non-profit, with much parental involvement. Most will offer English courses, and have many American trained teachers on faculty. With the exception of corporately affiliated schools, the international schools are normally located in hardship area where salaries and benefits are generous. They tend to pay enough not only to provide a savings, but also a good standard of living.

The Department of Defense offers teaching jobs in over 200 elementary and secondary schools in NATO countries. Usually these are on site at American military bases. The United States Department Office of Overseas Schools are located world-wide in many capital cities. These were established to serve families of American citizens working abroad. This is a great option for finding oversea teaching jobs.

Where can you find resources on these great teaching jobs? The European Council of International School Services; located in the UK, and in Princeton, New Jersey; publish directories of International schools. Directories will provide the name of the school, telephone #, fax #, the head master’s name, a description of the student body, and details about the school. After you choose an area you would like to get more information on, write to them personally and ask for where the school is located, what the salary would be, and how to apply.
