Those agencies include: The State Department, Treasury Department, Defense Department, Justice Department, Interior Department, Agriculture Department, Commerce Department, Labor Department, Health and Human Services Department, Housing and Urban Development Department, Transportation Department, Energy Department, Education Department, Veterans Affairs Department, or the Homeland Security Department. Also, there are many government jobs in additional offices within the Executive Branch, which have a considerable amount of bureaucracies under them. Those include the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the National Security Agency (NSA). Working at one of those departments is a true public service opportunity, especially if one obtains any of the government jobs described above in the Executive Branch. Additionally, it allows a person the opportunity to actively work in some way to carry out the policies of the United States, and offers a chance to make a difference, however small, in those policies because of how they are executed.

An example of another type of job would be to provide service within the Department of Education. That same Department has many other government jobs openings, as well.

In addition to offering many opportunities for desirable employment, government jobs also pay a quality salary combined with an attractive benefits package, regardless if one is right out of college or a seasoned worker. This is accomplished through many different labor unions that function within the government, as well as a desire of many agencies to make sure they can acquire the best talent possible, which means they must hire competitively to hire the experienced employees they need. Those who currently work in government jobs also report a great deal of contentment with their job. In 2005, a survey showed that one out of every three federal agencies scored higher in employee satisfaction than the private sector average.

With minimal research, one can easily find information about local, state, or federal level government jobs, as well as great opportunities for student interns. To locate government jobs, and possibly apply online, the official United States Government’s web page is: http://www.firstgov.gov/
