Choosing A College - Where to get your degree

choosing-a-college.jpgWhat are the specifics you should take into consideration when you are choosing a college to further your education?

When choosing a college, probably the first thing you should decide on is whether or not you want to attend a four year school or two year school. Many times, when choosing a college, you can choose to attend a two year technical school or pick from a variety of community colleges where you can attain an associate’s degree and then decide from there if you want to transfer to another university for your last two years of school to attain a bachelor’s degree. You’ll often find that many technical schools and community colleges have excellent transfer programs and agreements with other 4 years colleges which will transfer 99% if not all of your earned credits.

Another consideration when choosing a college is if you want to attend a large or a small school. It’s important to keep in mind that bigger schools often have more diverse courses, students and activities. If you’re going to be working your way through school, sometimes schools which are located in bigger cities will offer more opportunities for employment compared to schools in smaller towns. There are advantages of going to school in a smaller town though as well. Smaller schools have smaller classes and are always taught by real professors, not a grad student as you’ll sometimes find in larger universities.

When choosing a college, you also want to make sure you search for one that is going to offer the program or degrees you are most interested in. Take a look at the majors and minors. Also, consider the size of the student population vs. the faculty – how big are the classes? What are going to be the total final cost when considering tuition, room and board? Are there financial aid packages that are going to be available? Would it be more feasible to commute if the university is close enough to your home?

When you are choosing a college, it’s very important to actually physically visit the school you are interested in. Contact the admissions office at the school you are interested in for more information and set up an appointment to sit down and speak with the admissions counselor and take a tour of the campus.

Choosing a college is an extremely personal decision and can often be stressful at times. Take your time and don’t rush the decision. Weigh all the pros and cons and research to make sure that you are choosing a college that is best for you.
