Career Change - How to get started

career-change.jpgThere is absolutely nothing wrong with coming to a point in your life where you want or need to make a career change. Maybe your job isn’t exciting anymore or your company is downsizing or maybe you just need something that is going to work your brain a little more and challenge you. Here are some helpful tips to help you make your career change and make sure that you are on the right path.

Start by deciding why you want to make a career change. Take a look at your likes and dislikes about your current job and what you’d be looking for in your next. What are your interests at home? What are your passions? If you’re unsure of this, maybe you could look into taking an assessment test to help you. These are often found for free online.

After you decide on an area you would like to pursue in your career change, you’ll want to begin a search for the careers that are available in that field. You should look into how many jobs are available in that field and if they’re available in your area or if you would need to relocate.

The next step in making a career change is to decide which skills you currently possess are going to be transferable to your new job. You might be surprised to learn that a lot of your current expertise and wisdom will easily work in your job. On the other hand, you may also find that there is room for improvement and that you need to broaden your knowledge a bit and update your skills.

If you don’t already have it, you may want to consider gaining some experience in your new field before you make a permanent career change. If possible, maybe take up a part-time job and get a feel for what it’s like and to help solidify your decision on making a career change.

If you’ve been in your current job for a long period of time, you may need some help on job-hunting and how to research companies, how to update your resume and write a cover letter, brushing up your interview techniques and how to negotiate salary. There are many resources available online for this that you can use for free. Take advantage of them!

Whether you’ve been in your current job for 5 of 15 years, it’s never too late to make a career change. Be patient with yourself and focus your site on what you’re looking for through the process. You’ll find that job that makes you happy!
