The New York Times, a newspaper based in New York City, is one of the most influential institutions in the world. It is the winner of more Pulitzer Prizes than any other newspaper. The New York Times has 16 news bureaus in the New York region alone,
as well as an additional 11 national news bureaus and 26 foreign news bureaus.
The New York Times was first published in September of 1851. The founders were Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones. The paper continued to grow and change. Ten year later in 1861, it published its first illustrations on the front page. These were cartoons of founder Henry Raymond’s rival James Bennett who published The Herald.
In 1896 the paper was purchased by Adolph Simon Ochs. Ochs was instrumental in making the New York Times one of the world’s foremost newspapers. It became know for its thoroughness in its reporting of the daily news, both foreign and domestic.
In 1949 the first monthly weather chart was added and in 1950 the daily crossword puzzle was introduced. By 1987 the Sunday paper weighed in at 12 pounds! And totaled 1,612 pages!
In 1971, the New York Times began publishing the Pentagon papers. The government tried to stop their publication but the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the newspapers right to print the papers. The New York Times remains a powerful force in America.
The computer age arrived in the newsrooms of the New York Times in 1974 when reporters and editors began to use video terminals. The year 2000 brought the largest weekday Times which totaled 174 pages. At the end of 2005 the average circulation was 1,135,800 for the weekday edition.
