Sports cars can be either luxurious or sporting. Large and power engines are not requirements of sports cars even though many have that capability. Some of the early models lacked powerful engines and didn’t accelerate as quickly but were known for having excellent handling because of their light weight and suspension decisions. A brand that is still known for this today is Lotus.
The front engine and rear wheel drive layout is very common among sports cars. Examples of vehicles that have these characteristics are BMW M3, Mazda Miata and the Ford Mustang. In a format where the engine is mounted towards the center of the chassis (also known as MR) is also only commonly founds in these types of vehicles. The Ferrari and Lamborghini are known for this layout. The Porsche is one of the few manufacturers who use rear-engine and rear wheel drive. There are some sports cars who have front engine, front wheel drive layout. Examples of these are Fiat Coupe, Saab Sonett, Lotus Elan M100, and Barkely.
Most sports cars have very small back seats that wouldn’t fit more than some luggage or very small children. Over the years though, many manufacturers have tried to increase the seating room to make the vehicles more practical in the end.
Some very popular brands of sports cars are the AC, Alfa Romeo, Alpine, Aston Martin, Audi, Austin-Healey, BMW M, Bricklin, Bugatti, Caterham, Cunningham, Darrian/Davrian, De Lorean, Ferrari, Fisker, Jaguar, Koenigsegg, Lamborghini, Ligier, Lotus, Marcos, McLaren, Maserati, MG, Morgan, Noble, Pagani, Panoz, Porsche, Spyker, Triumph, TVR and Vector. Other popular brands, especially in the United States are the Dodge Viper, Ford GT, Honda NSX, Mazda RX-7, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche Carrera GT and Toyota Supra.
Because of some restrictions in the North American market, most of which are safety regulations, many sports cars are not available for either sale or use in America or in Canada.
