The beginning of the 2006 Nextel Cup season is fast approaching. The 2005 Nextel Cup Champion Tony Stewart and the rest of the drivers are getting ready for a new season starting in Daytona with the Super Bowl of racing – the Daytona 500.
One driver who is not returning is Rusty Wallace, who retired from driving last season. Rusty is still making NASCAR news, however. Rusty owns a Busch team, and his son Steven, will be driving the car, at least part-time. He will share the ride with Jamie McMurray, who will drive in twenty-two races; Steven will drive in the other thirteen and will make his debut at Bristol Motor Speedway in April. Rusty will be keeping busy, commentating for ABC and ESPN.
In other NASCAR news, Kurt Busch will be taking over the Number 2 car from Rusty (not a great choice in my opinion). Kurt Busch was sentenced recently to perform 50 hours of community service in response to the reckless driving citation he received last November near Phoenix International Raceway. Busch was suspended by Roush Racing, his former team, from the last two races of the 2005 season.
In more NASCAR news, Mark Martin returns for his nineteenth season, racing for Roush Racing. Mark had announced last year that 2005 would be his last year; however Jack Roush asked Mark to return when team changes left a hole in the team. Mark Martin has been a fan favorite for many years and is a class act among the drivers. Mark often makes NASCAR news for being a class act in this sport. He is admired by his fellow drivers and race fans as well. I think it would be big NASCAR news if Mark Martin came away with the Nextel Cup championship this year. He is the sentimental favorite and the most deserving of the honor.
Also making NASCAR news, there are other drivers besides Kurt Busch who have “switched rides.” Jamie McMurray joins Roush Racing and takes over the car that was previously driven by Kurt Busch. However, he will drive a number 26 car, not 97. Considering all five Roush cars made the Chase last season, McMurray has his best chance yet of making the Top 10.
Bobby Labonte makes NASCAR news by jumping from Gibbs Racing to Petty Enterprises to drive Richard Petty’s Number 43 car. Michael Waltrip also makes NASCAR news by leaving DEI (Dale Earnhardt, Incorporated) to Bill Davis Racing.
