Harley Davidson Motorcycles - An American tradition
Harley Davidson motorcycles have been around for over one hundred years. The first Harley Davidson motorcycles were introduced in 1903. Sales and popularity of Harley Davidson motorcycles has grown by leaps and bounds since the company’s humble beginnings in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The company has seen ups and downs in its one hundred plus years, but has been on the upswing for several years now.
The company is based in Milwaukee; however, there is a plant in York, Pennsylvania. The engines are made in Milwaukee and shipped to York, where the bikes are put together on an assembly line. They hold an open house at the plant every year in the fall, which I have attended a few times. You can take a tour of the plant, ride the new models, and visit dealer tents to buy merchandise; but my favorite part of the whole day was walking through the parking lot looking at all the different Harley Davidson motorcycles.
Harley Davidson motorcycles have been a part of my life since I was a little girl. My father had a 1967 Sportster, in fact, he still has it. I remember it was a vivid, bright, metallic blue, although he later painted it black. I started riding with him when I was only five years old. I would never think of letting my kids riding a motorcycle at such a young age, but things were different back in the early 1970’s. My father would often take me for rides in the summertime. Riding Harley Davidson motorcycles with my dad was always one of my favorite things to do when I was a child.
My dad later acquired my grandfather’s motorcycle not long before he passed away. It is a Euro Glide, I’m not sure of the year. Of course this bike means a lot to my dad since it was his father’s. I’m sure that he’ll never sell it; it will probably get passed on to me or my brother. My father’s latest acquisition is a Softail. As you can see, my dad doesn’t ride anything but Harley Davidson motorcycles.
For serious bikers there are big events you can go to. Daytona Bike Week is the biggest event of them all and is held in March each year. They also hold Biketoberfest in October. My parents went to Bike Week last year and they had a great time. One of the highlights of their trip was seeing the Tuettles of the Discovery Channel’s “American Chopper” who were making an appearance there. Another big event is Sturgis, held in August each year in South Dakota.

For me, Harley Davidson motorcycles remind me of my childhood, my dad, and the special memories we share.
