If you have ever been in a relationship with someone special, you have probably at one time or another thought of writing a poem for them. Of course, it’s easy to just go out and buy a card for them as well. Greeting cards offer love poetry for all occasions – Valentine’s Day, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions. But if you want to write love poetry of your own, how do you do it?
First, decide what the general theme of your love poetry will be. Think of the person you are writing it for–What is going on at this specific time in their life? Do you want your theme to be romantic? Passionate? Joyful? Sweet? These are just a few examples. You should always consider the emotional state which the recipient is in before you write a poem for them.
What format of love poetry should you use? The most traditional and common style uses rhyming, with words that sound alike at the end of each line, or every other line, depending on how many lines your poem is going to be. You can start by choosing words that you might like to use that rhyme. An example would be if you wanted to use the word “heart” you could choose words such as “part” and “start” as words to go along with it. The harder part is filling in the other words and making it all make sense and convey what it is you want to say.
Another form of love poetry is free verse. This form of love poetry doesn’t use rhyming words, but instead uses imagery and beauty to convey the feelings for your loved one. Although there is no rhyming, there should still be balance and continuity of the thoughts and feelings you are conveying. For example, don’t make one line a lot longer than another as this will throw the poem off balance.
If you are writing love poetry for the first time, you may want to start with a simple four line poem. Most people prefer to receive a short but sweet poem instead of a long liturgy that goes on and on. Greeting cards are a great example of short and sweet poems. They say exactly what the card is intended without getting too wordy.
With a little time and effort, anyone can become a great love poetry writer. All of us have heard the old favorite “Roses are red, violets are blue. . . “ so we have at least that much that we can go by to get us started! Love poetry makes a good, beautiful, and sentimental statement to family and friends that you care about, and they will appreciate the time and effort you put into writing something just for them.
